Testimonials by scientists, educators and teachers
I. Quality of the books
A teacher from another school introduced Small Science to us. For regular use we opted for NCERT's EVS curriculum because it combines science and social studies. We use Small Science for projects for our students, and as a reference. We love these books. Small Science is like a bible for us!
We are very happy with the Standard III books of the Small Science series. After a long time we came across science text books that we felt good about.
The Small Science volumes are beautifully produced, the style is engaging and the drawings and graphics are very nice too (I loved the page border that ended with a spider at one end, and a pencil at the other!): to my adult mind it looks as though the whole package will delight and interest a child!
We will study these excellent-looking books ... Book writing is a creative process. Your book is process oriented and aims to develop children as self learners. The get-up and printing of the book is also attractive for children.
... these are the kind of books we were looking for without knowing it ...
There is 'Small Science' in everyday life, and these little books empower you with this science, in terms readily understood by school children and even by grown-ups!
The Homi Bhabha Centre, a professional body devoted to the teaching of science has produced a curriculum, and appropriate equipment including books. The language, most literary and scientific, is kept simple and correct. Clearly, the production of these books, based on practical experience, has been a labor of love ...
We are A 20 year old CBSE school at Walajapet close to Chennai. Our main focus has been to provide an interesting environment for education. I was browsing through the Homi Bhabha website hoping to get some insight on training for our teachers in science, when I stumbled upon your books. I found your books from Classes I to V extremely interesting. These books with the support of teachers' manual is what we have been looking out for. We surely hope the way science is learnt will change with the help of your books.
II. Method of teaching
The books are well thought out and well designed. They give more scope to develop language skills of kids instead of just simply cramming everything they learn. They try to learn science in a systematic way. In fact we have been searching for books like these in science. Fortunately we got Small Science books now.
The emphasis is on students learning by observation. Children are introduced to the environment, body, food, etc, by kindling their curiosity, promoting what I would call selective observation and making them think. There is no question that this is the 'right' teaching method. The Soviet Union had tried this method even at the high school level, with considerable success. It is needless to say that the books are modestly priced. Perhaps there is no way prescriptive teaching can be TOTALLY replaced by the observational. But this fact does not need to be stressed in the Indian context where rote learning is the norm.
III. Practicability in the classroom
This is the first time I have seen an activity-based science book where the activities are worth doing and lead on to real learning and skill development.
We are using small science books in class III, IV and V. ... With more years of using Small Science we shall be able to overcome teaching problems, as the mindset in the case of most parents and teachers is framed on the conventional text books methodology.
In the first class ... it was very difficult to tell them that you have to write ... but once they were into that system, they knew that and were more than excited to write and they would say which page and we'll start writing in the workbook - they were really excited. And that helps to get the excitement into the teacher also. Sometimes even when you feel okay, this is the activity and you're well prepared, but you still get more excited because the enthusiasm in the children is also up with these kinds of activities.
