Small Science at DPS Bathinda
I joined DPS Bathinda in 2003 as a science teacher. As of now I have more than 15 years of experience in teaching science, at primary, middle and secondary school levels. For the past 5 years I have been coordinator of the classes from Nursery to Grade 5. I also teach Small Science in the primary classes.
We took up Small Science as a challenge four years back and worked very hard to make it successful. In the early years the parents were not happy with the books. They were not able to understand their own changed role, other than making the students study and revise at home. It was difficult for us to convince them that the children were really learning well without the rote method.
We had to build up our own teaching skills too. Every Saturday we would begin with micro teaching, followed by a one hour meeting among the teachers to share their experiences and problems, and to arrive at suitable strategies of teaching.
Now we are happy to report that even the parents have started appreciating our work. They are now realising that whatever topics the students learn, they learn through their own experiences — by doing activities, recording, and analysing their own observations. From my personal experience I can say that a teacher must possess a passion for the subject to teach Small Science.
